what is internal family systems (IFS)?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) offers a way of understanding the different aspects of ourselves that show up in our thinking, emotions and behaviour.

Most people recognise this in everyday moments — for example:

  • a part of you that wants to speak up, and another that holds you back
  • a part that feels certain, and another that questions or doubts
  • a part that pushes you forward, and another that feels overwhelmed or tired

IFS offers a way of making sense of these experiences, and working with them in a constructive and supportive way.

A different way of understanding yourself

Rather than seeing these different responses as a problem, IFS understands them as meaningful parts of you — each with its own perspective, role and intention.

Often, these parts develop to help you navigate earlier experiences or demands, and continue to show up in our lives today.

When we begin to understand them, something shifts.

Instead of feeling caught in patterns, you can start to relate to yourself with more clarity and choice.

What this looks like in practice

In our work together, we gently explore what’s happening for you in real situations — particularly the moments that feel important, challenging or stuck.

We pay attention to the different thoughts, feelings and responses that arise, and begin to understand them more fully.

This isn’t about analysing or fixing yourself.  It’s about creating enough space and understanding for things to shift naturally.

Why this approach can be so effective

Many approaches to growth focus on changing behaviour or thinking directly.  IFS works at a different level — by understanding the internal patterns that drive those behaviours and thoughts in the first place.

Because of this, change often feels:

  • more natural
  • less effortful
  • and more sustainable over time

Many people find this way of working brings a sense of relief — as things begin to make more sense, without needing to push or force change.

You don't need to know anything about IFS to begin

You don’t need any prior knowledge of IFS for this work to be helpful.

We will move at a pace that feels right for you, and use language that feels natural and accessible.

The focus is always on your experience — not on learning a model.

How this connects to our work together

IFS is one of the key frameworks that informs how I work, alongside my training in both coaching and therapy.
